MCD faces heat for zoo drain repair delay
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is in the dock for still not having started the repair of the damaged drainage pipes in Delhi Zoo after several black bucks died upon consuming contaminated water that flowed into their enclosures from a drain pipe opening into the Yamuna.
The Delhi high court on Friday ordered the civic agency to submit an explanation as to why the drainage pipes in the Delhi Zoo have still not been repaired with the monsoon not too far away.
A division bench of Delhi high court Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna issued a notice to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on the issue and sought its reply by June 1.
The reports of complaints sent to the Delhi government officials stated that 32 black bucks died since September 2010 after consuming the sludge that had flowed back into their enclosures from a drain pipe opening into the overflowing Yamuna following heavy downpour.
The zoo authorities are concerned about the other animals who face threat to their lives from the sewage water which entered their moat and the consumption of which can be harmful to them.
“The MCD is yet to start the repair work despite the fact that the first installment of `5.65 crores towards the cost has already been paid by the zoo management,” said a Delhi Zoo official.
The division bench has fixed June 1 as the next date of hearing in the case. The civic agency has been directed by the court to submit its explanation on the date.
