MCD in favour of BRT corridors

The MCD on Tuesday favoured construction of the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) corridors saying it would help in streamlining public transport in the capital. The municipal commissioner’s budget proposal for the financial year 2011-12 had mentioned detailed technical feasibility tests for at least 17 corridors. The MCD also proposes to

revamp the street-lighting on a road length of 750 km in the capital. Presenting the budget proposals for 2011-12, chairman of the works committee, Jagdish Mamgain, said that BRT corridors help in streamlining movement of public transport vehicles and encourage more people to take buses. These corridors have been proposed on roads like Bhishampitamah Marg, Panchkian Road, Kingsway Camp road, Rani Jhansi Road and others. Mr Mamgain also mentioned that the MCD was in the process of constructing at least 154 schools that would add 2,433 classrooms. From April 2010 to November 2010, the MCD added 60 classrooms, which comes to about less than eight rooms per month. Recently, the Delhi high court had rapped the MCD for running schools in tents and not providing adequate classrooms to the students.
The chairman also asked for a hike in the budget for community halls from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore saying there was a dire need to construct more community halls, as the high court has stopped holding of marriage functions in parks. He pointed out that eight new community centres were constructed by the civic body, while work was in progress in connection with 19 centres.
For municipal offices, however, Mr Mamgain has asked for a reduction of the budget amount by half saying it needed only Rs 50 lakh for the purposes. Towards maintenance and repair of hospitals and dispensary buildings, Mr Mamgain has proposed an increase from Rs 2 crore to Rs 3.5 crores.
The chairmen of other committees like the education, health committees and department of environment management services also presented their budgets at a special meeting of the standing committee.
