MCD Games new deadline July 15
After claiming that all the Commonwealth Games projects would be completed by June 30, the MCD on Wednesday said that it will take another fortnight and will finish all works by July 15. However, municipal commissioner K.S. Mehra claimed that all the major works were complete and only face-lift and street-scaping were left to be done.
Mr Mehra told the MCD’s Standing Committee that works like constriction of parking space near Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, street-scaping of 36 major roads, construction of 815 waterless urinals and other such works were complete and required only finishing touches. He informed that at certain place work was getting disrupted as other agencies were laying cables and have dug up the roads. However, within the next 10 days the situation was likely to improve, he said. The re-development in Karol Bagh and Paharganj was also going on at a fast pace and things should be in place in the next fortnight, he added.
The cable operators have been given clear instructions to put their cables underground or else they would be removed, Mr Mehra told the committee. He added that though certain underpasses were not part of Games projects, work on these was also advancing at a fast pace.
However, the Opposition councillors in the standing committee alleged that he was misleading them as lot of work remained to be done on the ground. The meeting was later adjourned following persistent sloganeering.
In an earlier meeting of the Standing Committee, the commissioner had claimed that all works related to Games would be over by June 30.
