MCD gives nod to better education facilities plan
The MCD has forwarded a `1,600-crore plan for expanding and improving its educational infrastructure, in accordance with the Right to Education Act, to the Delhi government.
The plan, among other things, proposes to expand the primary education to the middle school level in the schools run by the MCD. This may become a bone of contention between the Delhi government and the civic body as the MCD has been running only primary schools while the secondary and higher secondary education has been the responsibility of the Delhi government. It also proposes to have at least 10,000 new teachers appointed.
The MCD education committee chairman, Mahinder Nagpal said, “The plan includes improvement in the standards of education, extension of education from primary to middle, (special) arrangements for education to mentally-challenged and handicapped children, do away with the double shift system, co-education and to have common school timings for all schools.”
Mr Nagpal said that construction of 40 new additional school buildings, provision of drinking water, library, computer lab and improved furniture in each and every school will also be ensured.
