MCD razes 2 buildings for grave tilt
The MCD on Saturday demolished two buildings, which had cracked and had tilted upon one other in Shakurpur area of northwest Delhi. On Friday, the residents had evacuated the buildings fearing a collapse similar to the Lalita Park incident.
According to an MCD official, one of the buildings in the Shakurpur JJ cluster had developed a tilt towards the adjacent building, which was under construction. The residents had already been evacuated, said the official. Both the buildings were demolished.
On Friday, building No. 418 of Shakurpur JJ colony in Saraswati Vihar area of northwest Delhi was found to have developed cracks following digging work in its basement. The incident was reported at around 10.45 am. The DDMA was informed by the police, which had received a call about the dangerous tilting of the house.
While the Lalita Park incident brought to fore the poor construction in colonies, reports of building collapse or tilting have been surfacing frequently. Just a week before the Lalita Park incident, the MCD had to get a five-storey building in Palam demolished after it tilted dangerously towards the road passing along it.
