MCD seals 15 illegal buildings
Continuing action against unauthorised and illegal structures, the MCD on Thursday demolished portions of at least 42 buildings and sealed another 15. Also, in an apparent move to stem the rot in the building department, at least 30 engineers have been transferred to other departments.
According to the MCD, the sealing and demolition squads continued their drive in Shahdara (south) zone for the second day. This zone has been in the focus following the building collapse at Lalita Park in which 71 people had died on November 15.
Sealing of portions of at least 14 illegal properties in Lakshmi Nagar and Ramesh Park area was carried out. Unauthorised portions of at least 18 buildings were demolished in Geeta Colony, Gandhi Nagar and Preet Vihar. On Wednesday, the MCD had sealed 19 properties and demolished as many amid opposition and agitation by the local residents. The local municipal councillor, Sohan Lal, was also roughed up during the exercise.
The demolition of unauthorised portions of at least 16 buildings was also carried out in Najafgarh zone. The areas where the exercise was undertaken include Nangloi Jat, Mundka Sadh Nagar, Mahavir Enclave, New Roshanpura, Vaishali Colony, Rajapuri, Samalka and West Sagarpur.
In Civil Lines Zone, unauthorised portions of eight buildings were demolished in Vijay Nagar, Sabzi Mandi, Hudson Lane, Kashmiri Gate and Majlis Park, while one building was sealed.
Meanwhile, a decision to transfer 30 engineers working with the building department to other departments was taken at a high-level meeting, sources said. MCD officials reportedly expressed their view that the officials having criminal or corruption charges against them should be transferred out of “sensitive departments”.
It was also decided to focus on unsafe buildings and those which are more than 15 metres in height.
