MCD to set up new boards to highlight achievements

Desperate to get some credit for their work, amid constant criticism and the confusion of authorities that overshadows their achievements, the MCD is now planning to set up “boards” in all the wards underlining the works being carried out by the agency. The MCD elections are to be held in 2012. Chairman of the MCD’s works

committee Jagdish Mamgain on Wednesday said that a lot of developmental work was done by the MCD, ruled by the BJP, in the last four years. But often, due to multiplicity of authorities, the civic body does not get the due credit. These boards would help people understand and remember as to which development work was completed by the MCD.
The boards will have information about the details of the work recommended by the municipal councillors, total amount sanctioned and spent, along with the name of the contractor, the beginning date and the date of completion of work, said Mr Mamgain.
Mr Mamgain added that, besides telling people about the works undertaken by the MCD, particularly through the municipal councillors, the boards will also help the residents welfare associations (RWAs) in keeping a tab on the works going on in their area. “They will be able to monitor it in a much better way and demand accountability from the officers and the councillors concerned. This would also be a step forward in ensuring transparency in the functioning of the MCD,” said Mr Mamgain.
Meanwhile, the MCD’s plan buy medicine and sprays to prevent vector borne diseases like dengue and malaria seems to have been stuck in bureaucratic red-tape. The proposal for purchase of the medicines could not be passed in the standing committee held on Tuesday, as BJP councillors objected to the medicines and other items being bought from a particular company.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
