MCD staff is called to clean Village
After complaints that the conditions at the Commonwealth Games Village here are “filthy and uninhabitable”, additional sanitation staff from MCD were pressed into service on Wednesday to clean the towers.
“We have deployed around 125 sanitation workers at the Village for cleaning operations after our support was sought,” MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said.
The Commonwealth Games organising committee, which was till now using the services of private sanitation staff to ensure maintenance and cleanliness at the Village, requested both Delhi and Central governments for additional personnel after which the MCD staff were requisitioned.
“We are ready to provide all-out support to the OC. They have now sought more personnel and we will be deploying 125 additional sanitation staff at the Village tomorrow, taking the total number of MCD workers there to 250. deputy commissioner of Shahdara (south) Brig. (retd) Rajinder Singh will supervise the cleaning drive,” Mr Mathur said.
In an embarrassment to the organisers less than two weeks before the Games, the CGF on Tuesday termed the Village “filthy and uninhabitable”. —PTI
