MCD staff unions: A problem of plenty
City mayor P.R. Sawhney has reportedly asked the municipal commissioner to devise a way for ensuring that there is only one union of sanitation workers. At present there are over a dozen unions which generally tow the line of the political party to which they are affiliated.
Talking to this newspaper, Mr Sawhney conceded that numerous unions were creating problems in dealing important issues.
“At present there are 14 unions, out of which eight are recognised, while six are non-recognised but registered. What is the need for so many unions? If we take a decision for sanitation workers, it is for all and not for one union,” said Mr Sawhney.
Sources in the MCD said that the mayor was of the view that there should be only one union so that the administrative and the deliberative wing could hold negotiations and take quick decisions on issues.
Currently, the MCD is facing problem of a few unions working at cross purposes vis-a-vis the others.
While the MCD has agreed to all the long-pending demands of the sanitation staff including their regularisation and treating them at par with employees of other departments, some unions continue to create trouble by resorting to violence or striking work.
On Friday, the mayor had formally announced that all sanitation employees appointed after April 1, 1004, would be regularised.
However, on Saturday, the MCD again had to issue an appeal asking employees to join duty as all their demands have been met. It also threatened them with tough action if they continued to defy orders.
