MCD strives to beautify landfills
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is fighting hard to beautify the landfill sites that present a bad picture of the city to the tourists entering the city.
However, MCD sources said that what is being done now is something that is done annually and, unless and until the use of the sites is stopped, it would be difficult to prevent bad odour. Municipal commissioner K.S. Mehra, however, said that at least that portion of the site, which is visible will be covered with mud and trees would be planted, besides spray of bacteria that would help removing the odour coming out of the garbage dump.
A senior functionary of the MCD said that planting of trees on the sides of the landfill sites, like Ghazipur and Bhalswa, has been done earlier also. “But these heaps have become so huge that it would be difficult to cover the entire site. More over, if its use is not going to be discontinued, it will be next to impossible to stop the odour from emanating,” said the functionary.
Mr Mehra, however, told this newspaper that the use of the landfill site would be “controlled” to ensure that the side which is not visible from the main approach roads would be used.
“On the visible side, we will plant trees and cover the dump with mud. Bacteria would also be sprayed in some portions to remove bad odour,” said Mr Mehra.
For the record, the MCD claimed to have planted 4,600 tree saplings in Bhalswa, 5,500 trees in Ghazipur, 4,200 trees in debris dumping site of Ghumman Hera and 5,500 trees in Narela-Bawana landfill site.
