Meet on nursery admissions fails
The confusion over the criteria for nursery admissions in private schools continued with a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday remaining inconclusive. While the representatives of private schools are pushing for continuance of the 100-point system as suggested by the Ashok Ganguly Committee three years ago, the union HRD ministry has proposed admissions through draw of lots. There are also reports of difference of opinion between the chief minister and the education minister.
It is learnt that, owing to the stand-off continuing between various stakeholders, the Delhi government is likely to apprise the HRD ministry about the same and move further after taking its advice on the matter.
The private school operators maintained that they were not opposed to draw of lots for selecting 25 per cent children from economically weaker sections (EWS). This has been made mandatory though the schools were opposed to it. But they want to continue with the point system.
It is understood that Ms Dikshit is personally opposed to lottery system but education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely is believed to be open to the idea. The private schools are opposing the lottery system tooth and nail.
