Mercury dips after showers
Several areas in the city experienced light showers that helped bring the mercury down to some extent on Wednesday. The weather department said that these showers were on account of “local developments” and had nothing to do with monsoon, which will take some more time to reach Delhi.
Areas like Connaught Place, Raisina Hills, ITO and neighbouring Ghazi-abad, Noida recorded rainfall around 1.30 pm. “These were due to local developments. Isolated rain is expected in the next couple of days,” said a weather department official.
The maximum temperature in the city on Wednesday was recorded at 41 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal, while the minimum was recorded at 31.6 degrees. The humidity levels were high with the maximum being 66 per cent and the minimum 34 per cent.
In the last few years, the earliest onset of monsoon was recorded on June 15, 2008. Weather officials are hoping that the monsoon may hit Delhi by July 9. An official said that for such phenomenon a fix date cannot be provided and a 10-day period is kept to accommodate the variations.
