MP blames Centre, VK asks PC to quit

The gruesome murder of a Delhi University college student in broad daylight south Delhi set off a political blamegame in the city. While the West Delhi Congress MP Mahabal Mishra blamed the Union home ministry “directly” for the incident, the BJP on Tuesday said that there is a “vacuum” in the capital after chief minister Sheila Dikshit’s remark that women do not have a sense of security as in other Metro cities.

Leader of the Opposition in Delhi Assembly, V.K. Malhotra called for the resignation of Union home minister P. Chidambaram for the rising crime graph in the capital.
“Now that the chief minister and Congress MPs are holding Union home minister responsible for rising crime, Mr Chidambaram should immediately resign,” Prof. Malhotra said.
Meanwhile, Mr Mishra, known for his blunt statements, termed the murder of a second-year college student by an unidentified man near Ramlal Anand College in Dhaula Kuan as shameful and said that the incident reflected the total failure of law and order in the capital. He said that the Union home ministry is directly responsible as the Delhi police comes under it.
Delhi BJP chief Vijendra Gupta said that after the remark of Ms Dikshit that the women in the capital do not have a sense of security like other Metro cities, there is a vacuum as her statement amounts to her “giving up” and “surrendering” to the state of affairs.
“People are feeling demoralised with the spate of crime incidents in the capital. Ms Dikshit’s helplessness amounts to her surrender to the situation,” Mr Gupta said.
In a stinging remark, Prof. Malhotra said that there were many cases of rape, gangrape and murders in the past and the Delhi police always claimed that it has fortified the area against crimes. However, the Tuesday incident has not only put Delhi to shame but the whole country is shocked, he said.
