Mystery surrounds death of S. Delhi street vendor
A 52-year-old street vendor in Sarojini Nagar market, who was involved in a scuffle with the officials of the NDMC and the local police on Thursday evening, died of cardiac arrest in the early hours of Friday. There were allegations that he was “mentally tortured” by the civic and police officials at the police station, which led to his death.
However, the police categorically denied that he was taken to the police station or he was tortured. The police also said that no complaint has been made in this connection.
As per allegations, Om Prakash Arya, who owned a tehbazari site in the Sarojini Nagar market, got involved in a fracas with NDMC’s enforcement team and the police on the issue related to his site around 7.30 pm. It was alleged that some time after Om Prakash was taken away by the police, his younger brother Bablu, who was present in the market, was informed by a policeman that his brother was complaining of uneasiness. Bablu then took Om Prakash to Safdarjung hospital. Om Prakash died around 3.30 am. The doctors said that he died due to heart failure.
Arya’s son Arunesh alleged that had the policemen reacted early and, instead of informing his uncle, taken him straight to the hospital, his father may have been alive. Arunesh added that the scuffle took place on the issue of paying commission to the officials.
Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said the family has not made any such complaint. He added that Arya died in the hospital.
