NCW asks police to increase patrolling
The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday submitted 12 demands to the Delhi police for safety of women in the city. The demands were presented during a meeting between the NCW chairperson Girija Vyas and the Delhi police chief B.K. Gupta. The meeting is believed to have taken place in the backdrop of the recent gangrape cases in Delhi.
Talking to the media, the NCW chairperson stated: “Our list of demands basically outline measures that can be taken to ensure safety for women in the city.”
Ms Vyas added: “One demand, therefore, is that there should be more police patrolling on the roads and that a 24-hour women desk should be there at all police stations to handle cases of harassment of women more effectively.” Among the other demands are checking speeding cars and those with tinted glasses, ensuring that BPO cabs have GPRS installed and a woman security official when women are travelling and an effective women’s helpline.

New Delhi
Dec. 14: To educate people about measures needed to prevent crime against women in the city, the Delhi police will carry several messages in English and Hindi on its calendars and notepads for 2011.
The officials said idea behind the initiative is to create awareness about prevention of crime against women with the special police unit for women and children being assigned the job of printing special wall calendars, table calendars and notepads. “Our attempt is to create awareness about crime against women. The calendars note pads will have information like what one should in case of a woman being subjected to attacks,” a senior police official said. The spurt in the cases of abduction and gangrape of young women in the past few months has triggered the initiative.
