NCW seeks report from Delhi police
The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Thursday asked for a report from the Delhi police on the alleged torture of a girl along with her friend to death for wanting to marry against the wishes of her family.
NCW has taken suo motu cognisance into the incident wherein a 19-year-old and her boyfriend were allegedly beaten throughout the night by the girl’s family in northeast Delhi and killed by electrocution and flogging, NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said in a statement.
Asha and Yogesh Kumar were allegedly murdered as her family were opposed to her marrying the boy who belonged to a different caste. The police alleged that the family had forced Asha to call Yogesh from his Gokulpuri residence and had physically tortured him and the girl for hours before killing them.
The couple were found dead at the residence of the girl’s uncle in Swaroop Nagar area on Monday morning and Om Prakash and other members of her family were untraceable after the incident. Saini and Om Prakash were arrested late on Monday night.
Meanwhile, the NCW on Thursday also demanded police protection for the family of a minor rape victim in Meerut and said it would ask the Uttar Pradesh government to pay for the girl’s education.
Speaking to reporters here, NCW chairperson Girija Vyas also stated that she has asked the police to re-investigate the case as the family members have alleged that all the three accused have been let off by the authorities. The 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by three men, one of whom said to be the relative of a UP minister.
