New city top cop to be announced on Nov. 10
Delhi is set to have a new police commissioner with the Centre preparing to make the announcement early next week after the visit of US President Barack Obama. Director general of Tihar Prisons, B.K. Gupta is emerging as the frontrunner for the post. Official sources said that Mr Y.S. Dadwal, credited for the peaceful conduct of the Commonwealth Games, will be overseeing the security arrangements in place for the high-profile visit of the US President.
A formal order is likely to be issued on November 10, after the visit of Mr Obama, the sources said. Mr Dadwal is tipped to be appointed as the director general of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
Lieutenant-governor of Delhi Tejendra Khanna has forwarded the names of three senior IPS officers to the home ministry for the post. Sources said the other two officers are Delhi police special commissioner (administration) Neeraj Kumar and special commissioner (traffic) Ajay Chadha.
58-year-old Gupta is the seniormost, belonging to the 1975 batch of IPS, while Mr Kumar and Mr Chadha belong to 1976 and 1977 batches, respectively.
Home minister P. Chidambaram had said on Monday that there was no fixed tenure for the post of police commissioner and Mr Dadwal has many more months in his service.
