New DU course to go beyond education
In a bid to take education beyond blackboards and say good-bye to rote learning, Delhi University launched a course in innovation.
Addressing the first batch of students to B.Tech/ BS innovation with mathematics and IT course, vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh said that the new programme will help students discover a new world.
The DU has planned an interdisciplinary degree largely focusing on application and hands-on training.
“The programme has been designed in such a way that after four years, you will have variety of options in front of you which includes microbiology, mathematics, computer science or finance based on your interests or whatever you chose to study, this will benefit you,” Mr Singh said.
He said the course has been designed to bid adieu to traditional teaching mechanisms in the country and the approach is to take education beyond the concept of “blackboard teaching” while enabling students to think and apply into the real world what they have learnt.
In this programme, the students will spend a lot of time in laboratories — both real and artificial — and will be given a lot of freedom to pursue their innovative skills.
“As part of the study the students will also adopt slums or semi-urban areas in the city to assess the problems faced by residents and offer them solutions through innovation,” said Prof. H.P. Singh, university proctor, who is also associated with the programme as a physics professor. Teachers from multiple disciplines will be teaching the course which includes the faculty from informatics and communication, zoology, mathematics, physics, electronics and finance.
The programme will be taught in eight semesters. The students will undergo internships in the industry and undertake projects in communities at regular intervals.
