New measures to curb ragging
The Delhi University has come out with measures to curb ragging by setting up helplines for students and also deploying Delhi police personnel in and around the college campus.
“To strictly implement a Supreme Court judgment, the university will set up a control room in North Campus and another in South Campus on July 23,” said Alka Sharma, Delhi University registrar. In 2009, the Supreme Court ruled that colleges should create awareness on anti-ragging.
The helplines will work along with the 24x7 national anti-ragging helpline 1800-180-5522. The North Campus helpline will be 011-27667221 and the South Campus one 011-24119832
There were other important decisions made in the meeting of Proctorial Board of the University of Delhi, such as to deploy women police in plainclothes in and outside the college campus, she added.
She said, “The Delhi police has also assured that women police in plainclothes will be deployed in the university. In case of any ragging or eve-teasing, the police will take care of the offenders,” she said. Awareness against ragging will also be made through the university’s radio stations by the police officials, proctorial board and dean of students’ welfare.
“Awareness has also been imparted to Delhi University Student Union office bearers, officials of the police, Delhi transport Corporation and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation,” Ms Sharma said.
Other measures being taken by DU to curb ragging include constituting anti-ragging squads, mobile patrolling, extra vigil at all eating joints and circulation of anti-ragging posters.
Classes for the new academic session are to begin from July 24. This year, Delhi University is introducing the new four-year undergraduate programme.
