No bulletproof vehicles to ferry athletes
There will be no bulletproof buses to ferry athletes and delegates, travelling to and from the Commonwealth Games venues and the Games Village or other accommodations, the Delhi police has said. However, adequate security arrangements would be put in place to ensure top class security. The bulletproof security was demanded by Pakistani security delegation in the wake of the Lahore bus attack in March 2009.
Talking to reporters, special commissioner (administration) Neeraj Kumar said that there would be no bulletproof buses to ferry the athletes. The delegation from Pakistan also had a few more queries, which have been answered. Mr Kumar, however, said that there were no specific terror threats on the Games. However, adequate security measures would be taken up.
The police has, however, moved the Supreme Court seeking permission to remove the speed governors from the buses to be used for transporting the athletes. It is believed that in the case of an exigency, the speed governors would be a hindrance to whisking away the players and delegates to safety. It is being hoped that the Supreme Court would allow the Delhi police’ plea.
To a query on whether the delay in handing over of the Games venues to the police would hamper security, Mr Kumar said that ideally these venues should have been handed over to the police for security overlay by now.
“We would have felt happier if the stadia were ready and our security overlays were in place,” said Mr Kumar.
