No debris on roads: A tough task ahead

The Delhi government has given the deadline of August 10 for clearing all the construction debris. With barely a week left and the MCD contractors on strike, it is going to be a tough ask for the government to meet the deadline.

Talking to this newspaper, Delhi Municipal Contract-ors’ Association president Sunil Vohra said, “We have now reached a situation where we have to say that we will not be responsible if the Commonwealth Games-related projects are either not completed or get delayed.” Mr Vohra added that so far the contractors involved in the CWG projects had been kept away from the strike. “But they too have not been paid their dues for the past five months and are not in a position to carry forward their work,” said Mr Vohra. He added that the contractors have already stopped clearing construction debris since July 31.
Mr Vohra added that the contractors have not bought any tender forms related to the works around Red Fort for the Independence Day. “We are simply not going to do any work related to sprucing up of the area around Red Fort,” said Mr Vohra. The contractors are planning protest at Town Hall, the headquarters of the MCD, on Wednesday in which the contractors involved in the CWG projects will also participate.
Mayor P.R. Sawhney said during the talks with the contractors, the MCD had assured them that their payments till March 2009 will be cleared. “At the most, we can increase that by a couple of months. But we will able to give them only what we have at the moment,” said Mr Sawhney. Incident-ally, the government’s deadlines for stopping of road cutting, July 31, has already been violated and the next deadline of clearing construction debris also seems difficult to achieve.
