No need to panic, CWG work on track: CM

Amid pressure from various quarters on the Commonwealth Games projects, chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said that these will the best ever Games. She, however, denied any knowledge of the CVC report, which has indicted various agencies for compromising on quality and not following the norms while completing the projects. But Ms Dikshit added that action would be taken against errant officials when the report would be formally submitted.

Dismissing reports that the Commonwealth Games projects were behind schedule, chief minister Dikshit on Friday said that delays were not something to panic about and claimed everything was as per schedule.
“There is no need to panic. All the Games-related works are going as per schedule. If there are delays, then delays are not something to be panic about. The way we are functioning, we will be able to save some money rather than overspending it (on construction),” said the chief minister while addressing the media.
Ms Dikshit’s statement comes a day after she issued a gag order on her Cabinet colleagues not to air views about their inspections of the Games projects and not to allow mediapersons to accompany them. Finance minister A.K. Walia had on Thursday said the Yamuna Sports Complex, going by the way it is right now, may not be able to meet the August 31 deadline set by the chief minister.
Ms Dikshit also said all civic agencies and government departments are working tirelessly to complete the projects to meet the deadline of August 2010. “Our target is that by August 10 we will clear all big construction waste heaps from the city. So far, since last fortnight we have removed around 16,000 tonnes of waste. “Except two, all stadiums are almost ready and by the end of next month we will complete all work such as flyovers, buildings, street-scaping and streetlights related to the mega event,” the chief minister said. However, Ms Dikshit pointed out that work on few projects which have been damaged by rains is likely to finish in September.
The chief minister also refused to react to former sports minister Mani Shankar Aiyar’s criticism of the CWG. Ms Dikshit said that the government has endeavoured to upgrade the city’s infrastructure in the wake of the extravaganza slated between October 3-14. She added that “all the infrastructural projects have strong legacy value and will go a long way in the improvement of the city infrastructure.
