No shortage of platelets: Walia
Death toll due to dengue in the city went up to four with one more person succumbing on Monday. The Delhi government, meanwhile, assured that there was no shortage of platelets in the city’s hospitals to treat dengue patients. The total number of dengue cases on Monday went up to 1,370 with 75 new cases being detected. Two cases of swine flu deaths were also reported taking the overall death toll due to the disease this season to 36.
According to municipal health officials, a man, identified as Rakesh, succumbed to the disease on Sunday at the Safdarjung Hospital. The tests confirmed that he had died due to dengue.
The previous three victims of dengue, one of which was a case reported from outside the state, have been children.
Meanwhile, 59 new dengue cases were reported from MCD areas on Monday, the NDMC areas accounted for another 15 cases. One case was reported from Airport.
Talking to reporters, Delhi health minister, Dr Kiran Walia assured that there was no shortage of platelets in the city. There were reports that high incidence of dengue cases was leading to a shortage of platelets in the city hospitals. She told reporters that regular meetings were being held. She said that there were at least two major hospitals in each of the nine districts and there was no need for panic.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has decided to reserve an eight-bedded cell for athletes falling prey to swine flu at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital.
The LNJP medical superintendent, Amit Banerjee said the facility has been provided on the fifth floor of the hospital, which will cater to athletes testing positive for the H1N1 virus during the Commonwealth Games. The facility will have dedicated security, a separate lift and direct vehicular access.
Dr Walia added that the hospital has been chosen as it was close to many Commonwealth Games venues. LNJP was accessible from Games venues like the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex and Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, besides others.
Meanwhile, of the two swine flu deaths reported on Monday, one was a child admitted to Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, while a man died at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
The total number of fresh swine flu cases reported in the capital on Monday was 20, taking the overall number of cases to 1,165.
