Nod to MCD split likely today
The home ministry is likely to give a formal approval to the Delhi government’s long-pending proposal for trifurcation of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) as early as Wednesday.
Government sources said that the home ministry has cleared the proposal which is expected to be sent to the Sheila Dikshit government in a day or two.
The proposal to split the MCD was vetted by the law ministry and sent back to the MHA which has now cleared it, the sources said.
Notably, the Delhi government had sent the proposal to the home ministry in early June seeking the go ahead for trifurcation of the MCD ahead of the municipal polls.
The chief minister, who has been pitching for splitting the MCD, had met home minister P. Chidambaram several times in the last three months seeking early clearance to the proposal.
Sources said an Assembly session would be called shortly after approval to the proposal is sent by the Union home ministry to the Delhi government.
The Centre will continue to have a say in the appointment of Commissioners for the three proposed municipal councils with senior officials maintaining that the controlling authority will remain with the government.
Meanwhile, Opposing the proposed MCD split, Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi on Tuesday shot off a letter to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi appealing to her to rise above party politics and “help realise the dreams of Rajiv Gandhi” by not supporting the demand of chief minister Sheila Dikshit.
