Obscene MMS comes back to haunt JNU

An obscene MMS involving a female student and two male students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), which was shot some time in April 2010, has come back to haunt the University authorities after they came to know about the MMS being circulated commercially through CD. The administration has launched an inquiry and has promised severe action against those found guilty.

According to sources, the MMS was shot in Periyar hostel some time in April and involved a male and a female student. A third student also helped in the entire episode. All the three were from Tapti hostel. Initially, some of the seniors had come to know about such activities when informed by some security guards. They had then beaten up the boy involved in the incident and also destroyed the CD having the objectionable content. However, by that time, a copy was downloaded by the accused students, while the authorities remained unaware about it.
Recently, the authorities were informed about a CD, containing the same objectionable matter, being circulated in the markets of Munirka, where a large number of students reside. The authorities then decided to set up an inquiry and take strict action against the accused. The female student has gone to her native place in Bihar after the MMS was reported to the JNU administration. The male student involved too is from Bihar.
Chief Proctor Prof H.B. Bohidar confirmed the incident and said that an enquiry has been instituted. “We will determine as to who is responsible for it, the degree of their involvement and, if they are found guilty, then they will face severe action,” said Prof Bohidar.
A university official added that the enquiry would be conducted Prof Bohidar himself, keeping in view the sensitivity of the matter. It will take around a week or so for the inquiry to be over and the report will be submitted to the vice-chancellor.
The official also said that the students will be asked to make their deposition and based on the findings of the enquiry, a further decision will be taken. The official did not elaborate on the nature of the likely punishment that could be meted out to the students found guilty.
