OC, govt allay fears of dengue outbreak
The Delhi government and the Common-wealth Games Organising Committee dispatched letters to the Canadian and Australian Games Federations on Wednesday, explaining that the dengue situation in the host city is under control and it is safe for the delegations to arrive. A group of Australian and Canadian athletes, who were
scheduled to arrive in Delhi on September 15 have instead left for Singapore for training before the Games. It is believed that these athletes will arrive a day before the opening ceremony.
“In a population of 2 crore, it’s no big deal if there are 1,500 dengue cases. Even if the figures cross 3,000, still it won’t be an alarming situation and I don’t see this outbreak growing any further, definitely not to alarming proportions. The situation is very much under control,” said Union health secretary K. Sujatha Rao.
Organising Committee secretary, Lalit Bhanot, said, “We are in touch with the Delhi government, NDMC, MCD, and they are taking all possible steps to bring the situation under control. There is nothing unusual about the dengue outbreak. This is the monsoon season and every year there are dengue cases during this time. He added, “the government has initiated special measures to contain the spread of dengue and I am sure that things will improve by the end of this month.”
