Onion prices in city to dip after Jan. 7
Delhi government is hopeful that onion prices would fall by about `10 in the city with the arrival of about 300 metric tonnes of the commodity. Delhi Cabinet in its meeting on Monday reviewed price of onions, which have been selling for about `45 a kg in the Mother Dairy outlets and at higher rates in retail markets.
The city government on Monday said that the Centre has agreed to provide 300 metric tonnes of onions to the capital city. Delhi’s share is from about 1,000 metric tonnes of onions being imported from Pakistan.
The city government said that the cost of imported onions would come to about `33 per kg. It is planning to sell the imported onions through 400 outlets of Mother Dairy and Kendriya Bhandar.
Chief minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters that the imported onions would be available in the city from January 7. She said that the price of onions should be around `33 per kg. Senior government officials added that on adding the transportation and labour costs, the onion price at the outlets would come to about `36 a kg. Ms Dikshit expressed hope that the arrival of imported onions in the city would ease the price pressure.
After the onion prices shot up to `60-70 last month, the city government had placed purchase order at the Nashik market and had started selling the dear commodity from select outlets.
However, the prices did not ease out and poor quality of onions were being sold from the Mother Dairy outlets at `40 a kg, while good quality onions sold at higher rates.
