Onion prices to ease as fresh supply, imports reach market

Onion prices are likely to come down a bit following arrival of fresh crop and the subsidy offered by the Central government to Nafed. Onions were selling in the range of `60-70 per kg in retail markets in the city, while Mother Dairy outlets sold them at `50 per kg.

However, the city’s largest wholesale market at Azadpur on Friday got fresh crop of onions from Gujarat, after which there is likelihood of the prices going down by about `10 a kg. Even the Nafed on Friday stated that the Centre would compensate its 30 per cent losses for selling onions at its outlets for `35 a kg.
“Arrival of new crop from Gujarat has cooled off onion prices a bit. The impact is not only in retail markets, but also in the wholesale markets,” said general secretary, Tomato and Onion Merchants’ Association, Azadpur Mandi, Rajendra Sharma on Friday.
The onion supply at Azadpur Mandi on Friday is stated to be 1,100 tonnes. Mr Sharma said that a large quantity of over 500 tonnes of onion have come from Gujarat and 250 tonnes from Rajasthan. Following the arrival of fresh crop, wholesale price of onions fell by `2 from Thursday’s level to `43 a kg.
The onion traders said that following the nationwide raids by income tax sleuths there is likelihood of further dip in onion prices.
The Nafed on the other hand said that it would fix the new price of onions on January 15, while it is selling onions at `35 a kg from its outlets.
It also said that the new onion prices to be declared would be 20 per cent less than the prevailing retail market rates.
