Ph.D. scholar gets bail, but still in jail
A Ph.D. scholar of the Delhi University, who is accused of blackmailing and outraging the modesty of a civil services aspirant, has to spent at least 12 days in Tihar jail, despite being granted bail by a Delhi court as he could not furnish a surety and personal bond of `50,000 each.
Metropolitan magistrate Dheeraj Mor granted bail to the accused, who is a Junior Research Fellow and imposed strict conditions including payment of a personal bond and surety of `50,000 each.
“The bail bonds and surety bonds are not furnished. Accused be sent to judicial custody and be produced before the court on November 3,” the court said.
The accused is still in judicial custody following his arrest in the case on October 13.
In the bail plea, Amit Kumar, lawyer appearing for the accused, submitted that the accused is a scholar and has to appear in interviews in several colleges. Besides, he had no criminal antecedents.
Lawyer N.K. Tripathi, appearing for the complainant, opposed the bail plea alleging that the accused has been harassing and torturing the victim since June 14, 2007.
A case under various provisions of the IPC, including outraging the modesty of a woman, extortion and criminal intimidation was registered against the accused with Mukherjee Nagar police station in North Delhi on May 12 this year on a direction by the court on an application by the victim.
She alleged the accused, who was a student of a civil services’ exam coaching institute along with her, harassed her after she spurned his offer for marriage.
