Pink autos to ferry women in Gurgaon

The Gurgaon police is planning to launch autorickshaws exclusively for women on a pilot basis to ensure that women feel safe while on the move. The proposal comes in wake of the gangrape of a BPO employee in New Delhi on November 24.

Gurgaon police commissioner S.S. Deswal presented the plan during the inter-state coordination meeting held at the Delhi police headquarters here on Wednesday.
As per plan, a dozen autorickshaws will be put in service exclusively for women. These will be painted pink to make them easily identifiable.
Mr Deswal on Thursday said that initially these autorciskhaws will ply from Metro stations in Gurgaon to major destinations in the city. Also, only those drivers, who have been verified by the Gurgaon police, would be allowed to run the autorickshaws. If need be and, if the experiment is successful, more such autorickshaws would be put in service.
The commissioner added that the Gurgaon police was open to women drivers running exclusive autorickshaws. He further said that there have been several complaints from the women about eve-teasing when they travel in shared autorickshaws with men. Mr Deswal said that the police wanted the women to feel safe when they travel to work and back.
Recently, the Delhi Metro too had ear-marked one coach in trains for women. The DMRC had also fixed `200 fine for male passengers found travelling in the coach.
The Gurgaon police too had launched a drive some time ago, in which male passengers travelling in women coaches were forcibly evicted.
At the inter-state coordination committee meeting on Wednesday, the Delhi police had suggested that strict rules and guidelines should be issued to BPO, corporate and media houses in all the cities in NCR to ensure safety of women.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
