Poll push for ‘visible’ work in colonies
With only few months left for the Assembly elections, the city Congress government is trying its best to garner votes from recently regularised unauthorised colonies. The city government is planning to clear a proposal in the Cabinet to speed up the halted development works in such colonies. Sources said the government is planning to start development work which is visible immediately.
“The proposal of construction of roads in these colonies will be brought in the Cabinet meeting on Monday. Despite the fact that the three MCDs have not approved the layout plans for these colonies, the government will carry out development works,” said a source.
Sources said that laying down of sewer lines and water supply will take a time of six months or more, so the government is emphasising on construction of roads.
Around 592 out of total 895 regularised unauthorised colonies have been constructed on government land. According to law, the government can not start development work in these colonies without charging penalty from the residents. However, unauthorised colonies on private land can get the facilities. The construction work in these colonies has also been halted due to delay in tenders. The works have been distributed to many agencies like DSIIDC, DJB, MCD, PWD and others.
“Development work has been completed in 475 regularised colonies, it is in full swing in 172 colonies and is completed partially in 51 such colonies till March 31. The work of water supply in 700 colonies has also been completed and laying of sewer lines has been completed in 100 colonies,” said a senior official.
