Pravasi Divas in Delhi from Jan. 7
The Ninth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) will be held in New Delhi from January 7 to 9, 2011.
Making the announcement here Wednesday, Overseas Indian affairs minister Vayalar Ravi said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate it while President P
ratibha Patil will deliver the valedictory address on the concluding day of the annual event held to bring together the global Indian diaspora. The President will also present the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards 2011 to distinguished persons of Indian origin (PIOs) or non-resident Indians (NRIs).
New Delhi will be hosting the event for the sixth time.
A special feature of PBD-2011 will be the participation of the ministry of development of northeastern region and eight northeastern states as partner. There will be a plenary session for the chief ministers of northeastern states.
The focus of PBD-2011 will be on young overseas Indians. A plenary session on engaging with the young overseas Indian will be organised.
The event will see parallel interactive sessions on topics important to the diaspora, including an interaction between diaspora and Indian industry.
Next month, in October, the Overseas Indian affairs ministry will host its fourth regional PBD at Durban in South Africa. It will be held on October 1 and 2, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary and to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Indians in South Africa.
