Preserve stadia and don’t neglect winners: Delhiites

The fears and troubles of traffic congestion, security threats and the apprehension that Delhi will get a bad name during the Commonwealth Games are all now a thing of past for Delhiites. Their heart goes out for the athletes and the stadia in the city.
“Do what you have to do with those who allegedly indulged in corrupt practices. Deal with them strictly. But don’t forget the athletes who have brought us glory by winning medals. They have been working in pathetic conditions, unlike cricketers. Let us not leave them out, at least now,” said an emotional N.C. Pathak, a sports enthusiast and an advertisement company executive. “Also, look at the kind of jobs that will be created once the sports economy picks up in this country. It will be good for youngsters,” he said.
A.K. Pipal, president of Pragati Vihar hostel complex, whose residents have been facing problems due to tight security arrangements being very close to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, said the sight of athletes winning medals lessened the pain of being “in captivity”.
“My only concern is that once all this is over, these stadia should remain as spic-and-span as they are now. They should be properly maintained. So much has been spent on them. All this expenditure should not go waste,” said Mr Pipal.
Meenakshi, a housewife, questioned: “Will anybody in the government take responsibility to ensure that the athletes are given their due and the stadia are maintained properly?”
A travel body executive said that the only way to keep these stadia in proper shape was to ensure that more and more sporting events are organised.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
