Pressure mounts on top cop to quit
With the death of 23-year-old gangrape victim on Saturday, pressure mounts on Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar for stepping-down. Chief minister Shiela Dikshit and her son Sandeep, a Congress MP from east Delhi, have been demanding Mr Kumar’s resignation right from the beginning.
Ms Dikshit had already sought action on senior police officials alleging that the “top brass” should be held accountable for the gruesome incident.
Meanwhile, Mr Sandeep Dikshit has also said that there is a need to improve basic policing in the city.
“Suspending two or three constables will not improve anything at all. I think the home ministry should look into this,” he said. He, however, maintained that it is not the right time to talk about actions taken, citing the sad demise of the gangrape victim.
“The country is in a deep grief. It should be remembered as a national tragedy. The real condolence to her will be implementation the strong measures taken by the government. There is a need of improving basic policing,” he added.
Earlier, during the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs two days ago, Mr Dikshit raised questioned on the poor riot management system of the Delhi police. Mr Kumar was also present in the meeting.
Sensing the anger of Delhiites against the Congress government, Ms Dikshit left no stone unturned in proving that the fault was on the part of the police officials and the Delhi government should not be blamed. However, anger against her government is still clearly seen among the protesters. Earlier, during her meeting with Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, Ms Dikshit also sought action against police commissioner. It is understood that the chief minister had complained against the commissioner of police for poor policing which led to the gangrape incident.
