Probe ordered into Ramsar site pollution
The Ghaziabad administration has decided to conduct an inquiry into the allegations that untreated industrial waste is allegedly being discharged into Ramsar fresh water site that contains Ganga water. The site, located in western UP, has been set up to protect water bodies from getting contaminated due to heavy discharge of industrial pollutants.
Set up in the year 2005 by the World Wildlife Fund, the site has been in the news for the wrong reasons. In the past three months, several species of fish, crocodiles and tortoises were found dead at the site, which is set in Ganga water on a 165 km stretch between Bijnore and Narora in UP. It has been alleged that the toxic waste, including poisonous substances like methane, was being dicharged from the industrial unit of the Simbhaoli sugar mill, near Ghaziabad, into the Ganga river.
There have also been reports of at least 35 villages in the area being affected due to contamination of ground water.
