The Delhi government’s claim of completing all Commonwealth Games related projects by the extended deadline of August 31 appears to fall flat, as few of the projects are threatening to run into September as well. The ambitious Barapulla Nulla elevated road project to link the Games Village to the main sporting venue, JLN Stadium, is likely to get further delayed.
“The Barapullah Nallah elevated road along with renovation of the Yamuna Sports Complex are likely to get delayed further. Adding to the list is the ongoing work of street-scaping which has been hampered due to rains in the month of July. They are not likely to meet the August-end deadline,” stated a senior Delhi government official.
The official maintained that while a carriageway of the Barapulla Nallah elevated road would be completed by August 25, the second carriageway could be finished by the first week of September only. He stated that the trial on the Barapulla stretch could well run into the middle of September.
The Games will start on October 3.
The Barapulla nulla project, which replaced the shelved tunnel project, has already missed several deadlines.
Further, compounding the problems of the Delhi government is the delay in the renovation of Yamuna Sports Complex.
This stadium has to host the archery and table tennis events.
The officials maintained that even this project can well stretch into the month of September. Similar is the fate of streetscaping in and around some other stadia, which have been delayed.
Adding to the list of delayed projects is also that of plantation and greenery, with officials not yet having decided on the ways to put up the potted plants around various stadia. The delay woes further get compounded with the delay in the completion of the flats by DDA at Vasant Kunj. The officials maintain that delays are taking place due to multiplicity of authority.
