Queen’s Baton to arrive today
The Queen’s Baton will arrive in the city on Thursday. The baton would be received by lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna and chief minister Sheila Dikshit along with senior officials of the Games Organising Committee.
The baton will be taken to northern parts of the city on Thursday while it will be taken to east Delhi on Friday and on October 2, the baton will be taken to central Delhi.
The Delhi police has strengthened the security, deploying personnel on the relay route. “We have made the security plan for the Baton Relay months earlier. Personnel are being deployed for this,” a Delhi police official said.
Meanwhile, slamming the Queen’s Baton as a symbol of colonial slavery, Teesra Swadhinta Aandolan, an organisation spearheading the Third Independence Movement, has planned a “Deshbhakt Baton March” on October 2, which will be led by the nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
“In all major sports events, including the Olympics, the host country carries the torch. The Queen’s Baton is basically a stick of the Queen and represents a mindset of colonial slavery. To protest against this, we will take out “Deshbhakt Baton March” from Jantar Mantar to Raj Ghat on October 2, which will be led by Mr Jagmohan Singh, the nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh,” said national organiser of the group, Gopal Rai.
