Radiation leak case: New panel to pinpoint blame
Amid protests from the teachers’ representatives, Delhi University’s apex decision-making body, the Executive Council (EC), on Monday decided to institute a three-member panel to further pin-point blame in the April radiation exposure case.
The decision was taken following the discussion on the Pancholi Committee report in the EC.
The EC has decided that the V-C will form a sub-committee that will look into the report filed by the Pancholi Committee. Prof. P.R. Pancholi headed the committee that was set up to probe the disposal of the gamma irradiator from the university lab. The probe completed in July but the report was presented before the EC on only Friday.
“No one has been named in the report. On whom are they planning to fix the responsibility? This sub-committee is just an eye wash. They are saying that Pancholi Committee report will be submitted to the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board and the Delhi Police, but the report of the sub-committee will not be submitted. This inquiry should be ordered again to do justice to the radiation victims,” said Duta general secretary Prof. Khuntia.
The EC meeting was adjourned on Friday following chaotic scenes, and similar mood prevailed on Monday too. The teachers alleged that Prof. Rajib Ray and Shiba C. Panda were dragged by the marshals when they tried to object to the V-C’s arbitrariness.
The EC also decided that the five professors who have been named in the report would not be handed any administrative responsibility till they are cleared.
