Rain brings traffic jams, water enters IG Stadium
The second heavy spell of rain in the city and the NCR disrupted normal life for the better part of Tuesday with traffic snarls, waterlogging and other related problems. It also blew away the claims of authorities dealing with the Games preparations with reports of water entering the recently inaugurated cycli-ng velodrome at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
Although officials of the CPWD and the PWD maintained that there were no reports of water entering the stadia premises, there were reports that the roof of the cycling velodrome inside the IG Stadium complex, began leaking early Tuesday noon, following which the place had to be evacuated. Apparently, preparations were going on for a test event at the venue. The extent of the damage, however, was yet to be ascertained. The new velodrome has been constructed at a cost of Rs 150 crores and is fully covered with a seating capacity of 3,800. It was inaugurated on June 29.
Meanwhile, the city continued to face its usual woes due to heavy rain. Waterlogging and traffic snarls continued to play spoilsport. The works of various civic agencies engaged in the Games projects was also affected.
From Monday morning till Tuesday evening, the city received 42.8 mm of rain. More rains are in store on Wednesday. Meanwhile, water entering the basement of the newly inaugurated MCD’s civic centre gave the Opposition Congress councillors to cry foul over worthless spending of crores of rupees.
