Rain floods some parts of city, traffic hit
Even as the entire city reeled under high levels of humidity, it rained heavily around Indira Gandhi International Airport in Palam leading to traffic snarls, particularly around Dwarka underpass. Meanwhile, the power demand shot up almost reaching the 4,500-MW mark once again.
According to the weatherman, the rain began in the Palam area in the afternoon, almost coinciding with the arrival time of Airbus of Emirates Air. The area received 38.2 mm of rainfall by evening. Weather officials said at one point visibility at the IGI Airport was reduced to nearly 600 m. The officials maintained that rain at one or two places were predicted.
A traffic police official said heavy rain led to Dwarka underpass getting flooded. “We have got a call around 9 pm saying that the water has not yet drained out leading to traffic snarls,” the official said, adding that police personnel were trying to put things in order. Further, the traffic to and from Gurgaon was also affected due to heavy rains. Meanwhile, in other parts of the city it was absolutely dry and muggy. The maximum and minimum temperatures at Safdarjung was recorded at 36.6 degrees (two degrees above normal) and 29.5 degrees Celsius (two degrees above normal). The maximum and minimum humidity was recorded at 77 per cent and 52 per cent.
Amid high levels of humidity, the peak power demand reached 4,454 MW. The discoms had to resort to load shedding on account of “transmission and distribution constraints. Several areas, particularly in south Delhi, faced long powercuts.
