Rains increase dengue threat
The advent of monsoon has increased the concerns of the MCD about the spread of dengue, particularly around the Commonwealth Games-2010. The corporation has already taken action against officials concerned after a survey by domestic breeding checkers (DBCs) found mosquito breeding in the Commonwealth Games Village area, besides some other sports venues.
Municipal health officer, N.K. Yadav, on Thursday said that breeding was detected at the Games Village and the Yamuna Sports Complex (YSC), besides some other government buildings. The MCD has issued challans to the executive engineer at the YSC and the safety manager and in-charge supervisor of the Games Village.
Further, action has also been taken against officials of PWD at the Indira Gandhi stadium, chief medical officer of a CGHS dispensary at Laxmi Nagar, the maintenance officer of the R.K. Khanna tennis stadium, an assistant engineer in IIT campus, a Gargi College lecturer, official in BSES office at Katwaria Sarai, manager of a DTC bus depot at Shadipur and Estate Officer in ISBT Anand Vihar. So far, the city has registered 19 cases of dengue but the municipal officials feel that the cases may increase with the advent of monsoon.
Municipal commissioner K.S. Mehra said that dengue was a viral illness with cyclical trend of increase in number of cases after every three to four years. The number of cases in the last couple of years have not been high, despite a wet summer in 2008. Therefore, adequate precautions needed to be taken, said Mr Mehra.
He further added that intermittent rains and environmental conditions were conducive to mosquito breeding.
