Rains wash away peak-hour run

The Delhi traffic police lost one more day in connection with the trial run on the dedicated CWG lanes due to heavy rains on Monday. The two-hour trial, set to begin at 4 pm, was going to be the first such trial during the peak hours. The CWG lane trials so far have been carried out during the non-peak hours from 11 am to 1 pm.

A senior traffic police officer said that the trials were cancelled because the traffic police did not want to add to the miseries of the people, who were already dealing with waterlogged roads and traffic snarls. However, the schedule for trial on Tuesday, from 8 am to 10 am, stands.
The trials during the non-peak hours had resulted in confusion and traffic snarls and it was expected that declaring the dedicated CWG lanes out-of-bounds could have seriously affected traffic movement even on the arterial roads where the trial was scheduled.
The trials will be conducted on Ring Road from Chandgi Ram Akhara to Mall Road and NH-24-Ring Road crossing to Ghazipur crossing. Besides, the trials will be held at Maa Anandmayee Marg in Kalkaji to Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on Surajkund Road via Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, as well as Panchsheel Marg-Sardar Patel Road intersection to Mother Teresa Crescent up to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police has begun working on finalising the traffic plans for September 20-23, when athletes are likely to start arriving, based on a tenative schedule given to it by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.
The plan includes ferrying of athletes from the Indira Gandhi International airport to the Games Village and from there to practice venues spread across the city.
The traffic police has been advising commuters to keep off the roads where the trials are going on to the maximum extent possible.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
