Rape accused held, CM blames police
A Brazilian student, who was allegedly raped by her landlord in the upscale Greater Kailash area, has told the police that the accused, who has been arrested, threatened her with dire consequences if the incident was brought to the notice of authorities.
Highly-placed police sources confirmed that the 27-year-old victim, who is pursuing a course in journalism from a Noida-based institute, revealed that the accused, Amarjeet Singh, 35, who owns two properties in Greater Kailash besides running a finance company, threatened her to keep her mouth shut and tortured her mentally.
“When the victim resisted his attempt on June 28 and threatened to approach the authorities, Singh told her that he was having ‘good contacts’ in the administration and that her efforts to seek justice will bear no results,” a police source said, quoting the victim. The source also revealed that Amarjeet had changed the locks of the victim’s house to “harass her” and prevent her from approaching the police.
“The medical examination of the victim has confirmed that she was raped. We have arrested Singh and he has been booked under Sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code,” additional commissioner of police (southeast) Virender Singh Chahal said. The police said the victim was allegedly raped twice by Singh, who gave her coffee laced with sedatives.
Meanwhile, chief minister Sheila Dikshit condemned the incident and held the police responsible for it. “The police should step up efforts to ensure safety of women in the capital. This incident should not have happened. There should be a sense of safety and security for everybody, particularly women,” she said.
Delhi Women’s Commission chairperson, Barkha Singh, met the victim at the C.R. Park police station on Wednesday. “I want justice,” the Brazilian said after coming out of the meeting. Ms Singh said it was a “shameful incident”.
The victim had arrived in India in the first week of June and was staying at a rented accommodation in Greater Kailash’s P block since June 19.
On June 20, her landlord offered her coffee and later raped her. Amarjeet was produced by the police before a local court which sent him to one-day police custody.
