With the city receiving record rainfall for a single day this season, the city looked virtually submerged in water at several places, including India Gate, Akbar Road, Ashok Road and other surrounding areas. Elsewhere in the city, two people were injured in a house collapse, while roads caving-in and falling trees disrupted traffic movement at several places. Traffic snarls were reported on most of the major roads. However, with Saturday being off for a large section, the citizens were saved from worse

situation. At many places, though the people were caught in the jam for well over a couple of hours.
According to the weatherman, the city received 62 mm of rainfall within nine hours since 8.30 am on Saturday. Since Friday night, the city received 20.5 mm of rainfall.
An NDMC official said that waterlogging on Akbar Road was a result of the drains getting saturated with rain water as the downpour was heavy. Heavy flooding was also reported from Shivaji stadium, which is being prepared as pratice venue for hockey during the Games. “Work is still going on there and water would be drained off. Water pumps have begun pumping out water,” said an official.
However, Connaught Place, with all the Commonwealth-related work going on, was among the worst affected. Some of the other areas where traffic movement was slow including Gole Dak Khana, Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, and Rajpath. Besides, traffic was slow on Mother Teresa Crescent, Ramkrishna Ashram Marg, Mandir Marg, Purana Quila, Akbar Road, Ashoka Road, Janpath, Mansingh Road, Ram Manohar Lohia hospital and Lodhi Road. Fallen trees on Mandir Marg only made the matters worse. Two persons were injured when a three-storeyed building collapsed following the heavy rain in the main Paharganj area near R.K. Ashram Marg.
MCD’s central control room received only 35 complaints of waterlogging.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
