Retd official killed in Kalkaji robbery
A retired government official was killed by armed assailants at his Kalkaji residence in southeast Delhi on Wednesday night. The deceased has been identified as Janakraj Likhi, a retired deputy secretary of information and broadcasting ministry. He was a resident of 4/1, Kalkaji extension where the robbers struck on Wednesday night and killed him after tying him to a bed when he resisted their robbery attempt. The robbers took away Rs 3,000 from him after finding his room void of cash.
The assailants then broke into an adjacent house where they stabbed a 76-year-old woman Vidya Gulabani, a resident of 4/2, Kalkaji extension after looting cash and jewellery worth lakhs. She was allegedly gagged by the robbers when she started screaming for help.
The police said the incident took place at around 2 pm but came to notice early on Wednesday when the grandson of Ms Gulabani, Anubhav returned home after dropping his friends who had visited his home to plan a party for his birthday. Anubhav found his grandmother gagged and tied to the bed in her bedroom and started screaming for help. His parents rushed to the room on hearing the screams and informed the police control room.
When the police team reached the spot, there was a commotion in the adjacent house. The police rushed to the scene where they saw Janakraj’s son, Anil Likhi, a retired assistant engineer of Doordarshan, repeatedly knocking the door. He told the police that his father was not responding.
The police opened the door using a duplicate key and Janakraj was found in an unconscious state tied to the bed. He was rushed to Holy Family hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. “We are investigating the possibility of involvement of local gangs. We have recovered some part of the looted material and investigations are moving in a right direction,” a senior police official said.
Police sources said that the assailants had barged into the deceased’s flat after removing the iron grill of a window.
Nina Gulabani, daughter-in-law of Vidya said, “Anubhav found everything fine when he went to drop his friends”
Janakraj stayed with his son Anil and his wife Lovleen and two kids. The neighbourhood remains crowded with workers who are employed at an MCD construction site. Vidya’s husband Ramesh Gulabani is the CEO of Uttam Toyota in Ghaziabad.
