Roads cave in, traffic hit after rains
The capital cannot take even a slightly strong downpour with roads getting flooded with water, traffic getting affected and roads caving in, besides portions of buildings and trees falling in many places.
Beginning late on Tuesday evening, short but heavy spell of rain lashed the city. On Wednesday, intermittent rain continued to keep the city wet and water logged at many places. By around 5.30 pm, the city had received 4.2 mm of rainfall. Overnight, it had received 1.3 mm of rainfall. Some of the areas like Yamuna Sports Complex in east Delhi and Jaffarpur in southwest Delhi, besides Pitampura in west Delhi, also received very heavy rainfall.
A portion of Jaswant Singh Road, close to Ashok Road in New Delhi, caved-in for the second time in three days causing traffic problems. The NDMC officials have maintained that an abandoned sewer beneath the road has been the problem. On Rajesh Pilot Marg, a nearly 10-foot crater was created when the road caved-in. The authorities attributed it to leakage in the sewer line beneath the road. While nobody was hurt, caving-in of otherwise “good roads” in New Delhi area during the monsoon had been a problem last year too. Old sewer lines, some of which have been abandoned, that were laid during the British times is often blamed for the caving-in.
Meanwhile, South Delhi areas were among the worst affected on Wednesday. The Central zone of the MCD, which covers most of south Delhi, reported maximum water logging complaints (12) out of a total of 28 complaints received from all over the city.
At least four points in Lajpat Nagar and one in each in Zakir Nagar (near Mir Hotel), Ashram Chowk (under flyover), South Extension-I and Mehrauli-Badarpur Road reported water-logging. Water-logging complaints were also received from near Metro stations in Qutab Minar and Pitampura.
