Robbers set bank on fire in Alipur
In a bizarre incident, unidentified burglars set a local cooperative bank afire after apparently failing to get hold of the cash kept in its lockers at Alipur in outer Delhi in the early hours of Monday. The burglars entered the bank by creating a hole through roof and also used a ladder to get down. The police is investigating the case from all possible angles.
According to the police, the incident came to light around 6 am when some locals noticed smoke billowing out from the bank, whose main shutters were closed. The fire brigade was informed and three to four fire tenders were pressed into service. The firemen had to break open the shutter to douse the flames. When they went inside the bank, they found that there was hole in the roof. Also an iron ladder was also found on the spot. A few computer hard disks were also missing from the bank.
Initial investigations indicated that an attempt had been made to break open the bank’s locker. But they apparently failed, following which they decided to set the premises afire and escape.
The police is also not ruling out the possibility of involvement of an insider in the incident.
The manner in which the attempt has been made indicates that a proper recce of the areas was done.
The road on which the bank is located is a fairly busy one with a possibility of anybody trying to break-in through the main entrance of the bank was quite likely to be caught, said the police.
