A TV grab shows policemen coming to the rescue of the victim and her friend in Gurgaon on Saturday night.

When the national capital was busy celebrating New Year’s eve amid high security, a young girl was allegedly molested by a group of raucous revellers, putting a question mark on the security of women in the NCR.
The ugly face of the mob was seen near the MG Road Metro Station in Gurgaon when 30-35 revellers blocked the road and went on a rampage. The girl was coming out of a mall with her male friend when around 20 assailants stopped them in full public view and allegedly molested the girl. The police officers immediately intervened and lathicharged the assailants to disperse them.
“Various pubs and bars had restricted entry as many revellers resorted to drinking and dancing on the streets to celebrate. The revellers then created a ruckus and the police was called in. We had to lathicharge the crowd when the situation went out of control and a group tried to harass a girl,” said a police official.
The revellers also climbed up on the roof of vehicles and misbehaved with the passersby. A group of revellers was also seen stopping and kicking cars.
However, Gurgaon police officials said that no complaint was lodged against the assailants by the victim.
“We will surely take action if the victim complains. We have no clues about the whereabouts of the victim,” the official added.
Some passersby said that they were beaten mercilessly by the police even though they did nothing wrong.
“The policemen suddenly barged in with sticks in their hand and started beating up everyone. We didn’t even know about the molestation incident, we were just going to a party,” said Raman Lamba. An FIR was lodged against unknown persons for attacking two constables when they tried to save the girl.
“The policemen at the scene tried to save the girl, which led to a scuffle, prompting the police to resort to lathicharge. In the ensuing melee, two constables, Anil and Pawan, were injured, they were taken to a private hospital,” SHO Jagdish Yadav said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
