Safdarjung medicos call off stir
Students of Vardhman Mahavir Medical College called off the three-day-long hungerstrike after the hospital administration promised to look into their demands at the earliest. The students said that they will continue their silent protest though not disrupting the hospital functioning. The patients in Safdarjung hospital had a tough time in the wake of the strike called by junior doctors, forcing the hospital authorities to close down the out patient departments.
The students were on strike for the second consecutive day to protest the alleged lack of basic facilities. The hospital authorities persuaded the students to call off their strike after the resident doctors threatened to go on strike from Thursday.
The students also alleged that the police used mild force against them. “The police used force on us. They stopped only after seeing girls on strike,” a third-year MBBS student said.
Medical superintendent N.K. Mohanty promised the students that their demands would be fulfilled after which they called off the strike. Dr Mohanty said, “We had a meeting with the medical students and the resident doctors association. We have assured them that their demands will be met. We had given them a solution and to it they have agreed upon”.
There was utter confusion everywhere in the hospital premises which forced the hospital authorities to close down the OPDs, affecting over 8,000 patients. “I have rheumatism. I was called by the doctor today. Despite waiting for over four hours, I couldn’t see the doctor,” Simranjyot Kaur, 64, said.
