Scotland Yard security review soon
In the wake of terror threat to British athletes, a team of the British Metropolitan Police, popularly known as the Scotland Yard, is likely to arrive in September first week to review the security arrangements for British athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games. The team will hold meetings with the Delhi police. The athletes will arrive on September 15 and the team will remain with them through the event.
A senior Commonwealth Games Organising Comm-ittee official on Thursday said, “Members of the British Metropolitan Police are likely to be involved in securing the Common-wealth Games. This would at the very least be to protect the British contingent, numbering more than 1,500. The event is perceived to face threat from terrorists who wish to depict Delhi as an unsafe venue.”
Meanwhile, the Delhi government officials confirmed that the Scotland Yard has been working with Delhi police and other agencies associated with Games security and its officers visited Delhi last year. A senior police officer, associated with Games security, said: “The England team for Games will be the biggest and their security is a concern for us and the Scotland Yard.’’
Meanwhile, a senior city government official said that the move to involve Scotland Yard was taken after a section of British media speculated that England may pull out on security concerns earlier this year.
